হুগলী জেলা ভারতের পূর্বাঞ্চলীয় রাজ্য পশ্চিমবঙ্গের অন্তর্গত বর্ধমান বিভাগের একটি জেলা। হুগলী নদীর নামে এর নামকরণ করা হয়েছে। জেলাটির সদর চুঁচুড়া-তে অবস্থিত। জেলাটির চারটি মহকুমা রয়েছে: চুঁচুড়া সদর, চন্দননগর, শ্রীরামপুর, ও আরামবাগ। ইতিহাস বর্ধমানের দক্ষিণাংশকে বিচ্ছিন্ন করে ১৭৯৫ সালে ইংরেজরা প্রশাসনিক কারণে হুগলি জেলা তৈরি করে ছিল। হাওড়া তখনও হুগলী জেলার অংশ ছিল। জেলা বলতে কতগুলি থানার সমষ্টি। মহকুমার ধারণা তখনও জন্ম নেয়নি। এই জেলার দক্ষিণাংশ নিয়ে হাওড়া স্বতন্ত্র জেলা হিসাবে দেখা দিয়েছিল ১৮৪৩ সালের ২৭শে ফেব্রুয়ারী। ১৮৭২ সালের ১৭ই জুন ঘটল ও চন্দ্রকোনা থানা মেদিনীপুরের সঙ্গে যুক্ত হয়েছিল। প্রাচীনকালে সুহ্ম বা দক্ষিণ রাঢ়ের অন্তর্ভুক্ত ছিল হুগলি জেলা। নদী, খাল, বিল অধ্যুষিত এই অঞ্চল ছিল কৈবর্ত ও বাগদিদের আবাসস্থল। এদের উল্লেখ রয়েছে রামায়ন, মহাভারত, মনুসংহিতা এবং পঞ্চম অশোকস্তম্ভ লিপিতে। মৎস্য শিকারই ছিল এদের প্রধান জীবিকা। ১৪৯৫ সালে বিপ্রদাস পিল্লাই রচিত মনসামঙ্গল কাব্যে হুগলী নামের উল্লেখ দেখা যায়। এর থেকে বোঝা যায় জেলার নামকরণ বিদেশীকৃত নয়। কারণ এই রচনা কালের ২২ বছর পর পর্...
